Ultra-high strength aluminum alloys generally refer to aluminum alloys with a yield strength of over 500 MPa, the most common being the 7-series super-duralumin. This series of aluminum alloys was initially developed for aerospace applications and has now become the main structural material for military and civilian aircraft worldwide, accounting for 70-80% of aircraft structural components. It has also replaced expensive titanium alloys in many fields, becoming an indispensable lightweight structural material. With the continuous development of modern aerospace, nuclear industry, and transportation, higher requirements have been placed on the comprehensive performance of structural components. The new generation of ultra-high strength aluminum alloys, combining lightweight, high strength, high toughness, high fracture toughness, and resistance to stress corrosion, is undoubtedly the preferred solution. Ultra-high strength aluminum alloys belong to the 7xxx series (Al-Zn-Mg-Cu series) alloys, an important branch of this series. They are characterized by low density and high specific strength and are widely used in aviation, aerospace, nuclear industry, and weaponry. According to the classification of aerospace aluminum alloy generations, ultra-high strength aluminum alloys have developed to the fifth generation. Research in this field in Europe and the United States has generally followed a development path of high strength ? high strength and high toughness ? ultra-high strength, achieving a series of advancements: from the 7075 alloy developed in the early 20th century, to the 500 MPa-level alloys such as 7475 and 7050 in the 1970s, the 600 MPa-level alloys such as 7055 and 7150 in the 1990s, and then to the 700 MPa-level alloys such as 7136, 7068, and 7095 in the 21st century. Domestically, a large amount of research has also been conducted in this field, and development has been very rapid. Currently, mature applications of 500 MPa and 600 MPa-level aluminum alloys have been achieved, and several new ultra-high strength aluminum alloys with strengths exceeding 700 MPa have been independently developed. Among these, alloys with strengths of 700750 MPa are being rapidly promoted and applied, while alloys with strengths of 800 MPa and above are in the technology reserve stage. With the continuous development of aluminum alloy preparation technology and the continuous improvement of strength levels, the industrys definition of the strength of ultra-high strength aluminum alloys has gradually increased from the earlier 600 MPa to 650-700 MPa and above. The preparation of ultra-high strength aluminum alloys mainly includes traditional ingot metallurgy (IM), rapid solidification (RS)/powder metallurgy (PM), and spray forming (SF). The latter two methods have relatively complex preparation processes and higher costs, and the specifications of semi-finished products are limited by the available billets, which has affected their development to some extent. The IM method, however, has a shorter process flow, lower preparation costs, and produces a wide variety of semi-finished products in large sizes, making it the most widely used aluminum alloy preparation method in engineering. In 2024, the global production of Aerospace Ultra-high Strength Aluminum Alloy was approximately 217,500 tons, with an average selling price of US$4,225.35 per ton, a gross profit margin of approximately 24.6%-38%, and an annual production capacity of 100,000 tons. Downstream customers: Boeing, Airbus, etc.
Aluminum alloys, as a relatively mature lightweight high-strength alloy material, are used extensively in aerospace. Aluminum alloys are generally used as structural materials, possessing higher specific strength and superior processing performance than steel. The aerospace field primarily develops high-strength, high-toughness, and highly corrosion-resistant aluminum alloys to meet the demanding operating conditions of aerospace applications. The 2000 series and 7000 series aluminum alloys are widely used. The main components of 2000 series aluminum alloys are aluminum (Al), copper (Cu), and magnesium (Mg), while the main components of 7000 series aluminum alloys are Al, zinc (Zn), Mg, and Cu. There are also some high-performance (high-strength, high-toughness, and corrosion-resistant) aluminum alloys obtained by adding special elements. Currently, the main method for obtaining high-performance aluminum alloys is through modifying the casting conditions. High-strength aluminum alloys with excellent performance are mainly used in the aerospace and military fields. Because aerospace and military products have extremely high requirements for weight reduction, high specific strength materials are the preferred choice for aerospace applications. In aircraft aluminum materials, 7000 series high-strength, high-toughness aluminum alloys and 2000 series medium-strength, high-toughness aluminum alloys play important roles. 7000 series aluminum alloys primarily use Zn as the additive element. Heat treatment can enhance the toughness of the alloy. Adding Mg can improve its hot deformation properties and expand its quenching range. Changing heat treatment conditions can improve strength, weldability, and corrosion resistance. However, the introduction of Mg makes the aluminum alloy highly susceptible to stress corrosion. Therefore, 7000 series aluminum alloys are high-strength, weldable alloys with high stress corrosion sensitivity. Al/Zn/Mg/Cu alloys with added Cu have even higher strength, belonging to ultra-high-strength aluminum alloys. Their yield strength and tensile strength are very close, with high yield strength ratio and specific strength, but poor plasticity and low strength at high temperatures. They are often used for load-bearing structural components with operating temperatures below 120?.
