Dissolving microarray patches are skin-applied patches covered with an array of tiny needles made from water-soluble or biodegradable materials (such as sugars or biocompatible polymers) that contain a drug or vaccine within the needle matrix. When pressed onto the skin, the microneedles painlessly penetrate the outer barrier and then dissolve or swell in the interstitial fluid, releasing the payload into the upper skin layers before the patch backing is removed and discarded. Because the needles do not remain as sharp waste, dissolving microarray patches are being developed to simplify self-administration, improve patient acceptance, and potentially enhance stability and distribution compared with traditional injections, especially for vaccines and other therapies delivered intradermally.


Consumer/cosmetic microarray patches typically cost between $0.75 and $1.60 per patch. Vaccine microarray patches (MAPs) cost between $0.85 and $5.00 per dose/patch.


Dissolving microarray patches (dissolving microneedle patches) combine a drug product with a single-use microstructured device, so the upstream supply chain spans both pharmaceutical and advanced materials inputs. Upstream starts with the active (vaccine antigen, small molecule, peptide/biologic) and formulation excipients chosen to stabilize the payload in a solid matrix, plus dissolvable microneedle-forming materials such as sugars and water-soluble/biodegradable polymers, along with precision micro-molds/tooling, cleanroom consumables, and packaging materials designed for moisture and oxygen control (foil laminates, desiccants, barrier pouches). Manufacturing typically involves preparing a drug-in-matrix formulation, filling or casting into micro-molds (often with tip-loading or layered casting), controlled drying to lock in dose and stability, demolding and lamination to a backing/adhesive, and rigorous QC for dose uniformity, mechanical strength/insertion performance, residual moisture, particulate/bioburden, and stability, followed by validated packaging and distribution that often emphasizes humidity protection. Downstream, products move through a combination-product pathway into clinical supply and, when commercial, into channels such as immunization programs, clinics, pharmacies, and at-home self-administration, with logistics and training shaped by whether an applicator is needed, how the patch is disposed (minimal sharps), and how performance is verified in real-world use.
