A Float Zone (FZ) Monocrystalline Silicon Furnace is a specialized piece of equipment used for the production of monocrystalline silicon. It is based on the float - zone technique, which is a method of crystal growth. The FZ technique is a crucible-free crystal growth method. In FZ growth, the molten zone is kept between two vertical solid rods by its own surface tension. A single crystal is grown by dipping a seed crystal into one end of the zone and translating the molten zone toward the feed stock. The silicon crystals grown through the FZ process are considered the purest crystalline silicon available. This type of silicon is used for power devices, electronic circuits, and photoelectronics.
