Shock absorber jounce bumper is an elastic limiting and energy absorbing component installed at the end of the stroke or near the upper support of the suspension shock absorber piston rod. It is usually made of polyurethane, rubber or microporous elastic material. When the vehicle encounters a large impact or the suspension compression approaches its limit, it contacts the metal part first and is gradually compressed, converting the impact energy into elastic deformation and internal heat consumption, thereby avoiding abnormal noise, impact sensation and part damage caused by shock absorber top dead and hard collision, and improving the progressive support at the end of the stroke, vehicle attitude stability and NVH performance. In 2025, global Shock Absorber Jounce Bumper production reached approximately 384.15 M Units, with an average global market price of around US$ 7 per unit.The annual production capacity of shock absorber buffer blocks is 6 million pieces, with a gross profit margin of about 15%.


The upstream mainly includes two major systems: polyurethane route and rubber route. The core raw materials of polyurethane buffer block are isocyanates such as MDI and TDI, polyols, chain extenders and catalysts, foaming and micropore control additives, release agents and toners, as well as necessary metal inserts or plastics. The skeleton and bonding primer, and the rubber buffer block are mainly based on NR, SBR, EPDM or NBR, with auxiliary materials such as carbon black, white carbon black, plasticizers, vulcanization systems and antioxidants. At the same time, both routes rely on mold steel, mold processing, packaging materials and energy.


Downstream are mainly shock absorber assembly plants and suspension system integrators, which further supply the OEM supporting market. At the same time, they are sold in the after-sales market in the form of vehicle model platform adapters. The demand is strongly related to the comfort suspension of passenger cars, the heavy-duty working conditions of SUVs and light commercial vehicles, and the long-travel and high-impact scenarios of off-road and high-performance models.


The raw material cost is 65%, the manufacturing cost is 25%, and the labor cost is 10%.


New energy vehicles have higher requirements for chassis sound insulation and shock absorption, and are more likely to use polyurethane shock absorbing materials instead of rubber. Polyurethane shock absorbing elements can achieve better sound insulation and shock absorbing effects than rubber. The bicycle supporting value of polyurethane products for new energy vehicles may be greater than that of traditional fuel vehicles, because in addition to being used in traditional suspension systems, polyurethane shock-absorbing components can expand the scope of application in new energy electric vehicles (motor suspension, battery base suspension, etc.). Pure electric vehicles have a more urgent need for lightweight and are more inclined to use plastic pedals instead of metal pedals.


At present, consumers have higher and higher requirements for the comfort of driving and riding in cars, and their requirements for sound insulation and shock absorption of cars continue to increase. Shock-absorbing elements made of polyurethane materials have significant advantages over rubber materials in terms of shock-absorbing effect, durability, manufacturing process, noise reduction performance and other additional functions. At present, polyurethane buffer blocks have basically replaced rubber materials, but polyurethane spring pads and polyurethane rear shock-absorbing supports are in the process of replacing rubber materials. Moreover, the prices of MDI and TDI, the important raw materials of polyurethane, are currently at a low level. The price disadvantage of polyurethane raw materials and rubber is gradually narrowing, which is expected to accelerate the process of polyurethane materials replacing rubber materials.
