Soluble microarray patches are skin-applied patches covered with microscopic needles made from water-soluble or bioresorbable materials (such as sugars or biodegradable polymers) that pierce the outer skin layer and then dissolve after application, releasing the active ingredient directly into the upper skin tissue. The drug or vaccine is typically incorporated within the microneedle tips or the whole needle matrix during molding or casting, so delivery occurs as the structures dissolve and the patch backing is later removed, leaving no sharp waste. Because they can be designed for low-pain, simple self-application and potentially improved stability for certain formulations, soluble microarray patches are being developed for vaccines and a range of therapeutics where easier administration, safer disposal, and more consistent dosing are valuable.


Consumer/cosmetic microarray patches typically cost between $0.75 and $1.60 per patch. Vaccine microarray patches (MAPs) cost between $0.85 and $5.00 per dose/patch.


Soluble microarray patches (dissolving microneedle patches) combine a drug product with a single-use microstructured device, so the upstream supply chain spans both pharmaceutical and advanced materials inputs. Upstream starts with the active (vaccine antigen, small molecule, peptide/biologic) and formulation excipients chosen to stabilize the payload in a solid matrix, plus dissolvable microneedle-forming materials such as sugars and water-soluble/biodegradable polymers, along with precision micro-molds/tooling, cleanroom consumables, and packaging materials designed for moisture and oxygen control (foil laminates, desiccants, barrier pouches). Manufacturing typically involves preparing a drug-in-matrix formulation, filling or casting into micro-molds (often with tip-loading or layered casting), controlled drying to lock in dose and stability, demolding and lamination to a backing/adhesive, and rigorous QC for dose uniformity, mechanical strength/insertion performance, residual moisture, particulate/bioburden, and stability, followed by validated packaging and distribution that often emphasizes humidity protection. Downstream, products move through a combination-product pathway into clinical supply and, when commercial, into channels such as immunization programs, clinics, pharmacies, and at-home self-administration, with logistics and training shaped by whether an applicator is needed, how the patch is disposed (minimal sharps), and how performance is verified in real-world use.
