In terms of cost structure, 70% of the cost of the chemical method is spent on reductive hydrogenation, protection-deprotection, and purification. Solvent hydrogenation using Pd/C, Raney nickel, and depreciation of high and low pressure reactors account for the majority of the cost. The fermentation method uses only glucose and inorganic nitrogen as raw materials, but involves multiple enzymatic steps, a product concentration of only 12 g L?, and downstream concentration/decolorization accounts for more than 55%. Currently, the cost per kilogram is still 1520% higher than the chemical method.
