Wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) refers to a technology that uses an alkaline slurry or solution as an absorbent to spray and wash flue gas containing SO? within an absorption tower. This causes SO? to react with the absorbent to form sulfites and sulfates, thereby removing SO? from the flue gas. The process takes place in a solution or slurry, and both the desulfurizing agent and the desulfurization products are in a wet state. This system is typically equipped with auxiliary facilities such as slurry circulation, oxidation, and gypsum dewatering to ensure continuous and stable operation and effective treatment of byproducts. Due to its high desulfurization efficiency (typically exceeding 90%), mature technology, and reliability, it has become an important means for coal-fired power plants to control air pollution. In 2024, the global wet flue gas desulfurization market had a unit price of US$148,500 per unit, sales volume of approximately 10,700 units, global production capacity of 11,000 units, and an industry profit margin of 25-35%.

Global Regional Markets

Asia Pacific: The fastest growing market, especially in China and India. Rapid industrial development and stringent environmental policies are driving huge demand for wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems.North America and Europe: Two important production and demand regions with mature markets. Their growth is primarily driven by stringent emission regulations (such as the US Clean Air Act and the EU Industrial Emissions Directive).

Upstream and Downstream Industry Chains

Upstream: Mainly includes raw materials such as absorbents (e.g., limestone, lime, ammonia), steel, catalysts, and filter media, as well as key components such as pumps, fans, and valves. High-performance filter media and some special materials still rely somewhat on imports.

Midstream: This is the core link in equipment manufacturing and system integration, responsible for the design, integration, and engineering construction of absorption towers, spray systems, demisters, and the entire desulfurization system.Downstream: The application market is mainly in the power industry (coal-fired power plants), but market demand from non-power industrial sectors such as steel, cement, chemicals, and metallurgy is growing rapidly and becoming a major growth driver.

Technological Trends and Innovations

Currently, wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) technology is evolving towards integration, intelligence, and resource utilization: Collaborative Governance and Integration: Technological development is shifting from single-pollutant treatment to multi-pollutant synergistic control. For example, coal-fired flue gas wet synergistic desulfurization and decarbonization technology has become a research hotspot, aiming to achieve simultaneous and efficient removal of SO? and CO? based on a single solvent. Intelligent Operation and Maintenance: Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies are deeply integrated with environmental protection equipment. Through dynamic optimization of equipment operating parameters, predictive maintenance and real-time monitoring are achieved, effectively reducing energy consumption and operation and maintenance costs, and improving system stability and economy. Process Improvement and Resource Utilization: Addressing the challenges of traditional wet FGD systems, such as large footprint, high equipment investment, and insufficient system stability, the industry is developing more efficient, economical, and stable systems through innovative design and system optimization. Simultaneously, the resource utilization of desulfurization byproduct gypsum (e.g., for construction and agriculture) is becoming more widespread, aligning with the circular economy concept.

Policy Support

Strong policies and regulations are key drivers for industry development. Governments worldwide are implementing stringent environmental regulations to limit sulfur dioxide (SO?) emissions. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed new rules requiring significant reductions in emissions from the power sector. The European Unions Industrial Emissions Directive sets binding limits on various pollutants, including SO?. China, in its 14th Five-Year Plan and other national strategies, also emphasizes environmental protection and technological innovation, supporting the application of intelligent technologies, including AI, in emission control systems. These policies not only set clear emission reduction targets but also guide and incentivize enterprises to adopt more advanced and efficient pollution control technologies through market-based means such as mandatory standards, tax incentives, and green credit.

Future Outlook

Looking ahead, the wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system industry will exhibit the following development trends: Market Focus Shift: As ultra-low emission retrofitting in the power sector gradually completes in some developed regions, market demand will accelerate its shift towards non-power sectors such as steel, cement, and chemicals, as well as emerging economies. Deepening Technological Integration: Digital technologies such as AI and big data will be more deeply integrated with desulfurization processes, giving rise to more one-stop intelligent governance solutions and improving operational efficiency and regulatory transparency. Low-carbon and resource-based development will drive the industrys upgrade: Under the dual carbon goal, the industry will focus more on low-carbon and resource-based development. The research and application of synergistic desulfurization and decarbonization technologies will gradually deepen, while the high-value utilization of desulfurization by-products will also accelerate, promoting the entire industrys transformation towards near-zero emissions and a circular economy.
