Diamond coating is one of the new tool coating materials, DLC coatings have a hardness range of 1500 - 3200 HV and are deposited at relatively low temperatures below 200C. It uses low-pressure chemical vapor deposition technology to grow a layer of polycrystalline diamond film on the cemented carbide substrate. The diamond-like coating has obvious advantages in the machining of certain materials (Al, Ti and their composite materials) . Compared with natural diamond, the microstructure of the diamond-like carbon coating deposited by low-pressure vapor phase is still quite different. The hydrogen in DLC will be released slowly at a higher temperature, causing the coating to work unstable. Hydrogen-free DLC has higher hardness than hydrogen-containing DLC, and has the advantages of uniform structure, large-area deposition, low cost, and smooth surface. The friction coefficient of hydrogenated DLC increases slightly in the air environment, but it is always much smaller than that of hydrogen-free DLC. . DLC coatings are typically applied after depositing a PVD underlayer such as titanium (Ti), chromium (Cr) or chromium nitride (CrN), or a combination thereof, on the surface of the part, the choice of which depends on a number of factors , such as the hardness of the surface (substrate) of the part, the bonding characteristics with the substrate, the load-bearing requirements of the application, etc. DLC coatings will not work when used at temperatures above 350C. Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings can be deposited by different techniques such as PVD arc, PVD sputtering and PACVD processes. Hydrogenated amorphous carbon is most commonly applied by plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD), and most hydrogen-free coatings use physical vapor deposition (PVD), which produces tetrahedral amorphous carbon by arc evaporation. At present, in addition to the two types of DLC coatings on the market: hydrogen-containing type and hydrogen-free type, two types of ion-implanted DLC and metal-doped DLC have emerged.
