1. Redox Potential: The ETC relies on the transfer of electrons from electron donors such as NADH and FADH2 to electron acceptors such as molecular oxygen. This process creates a proton gradient, with a higher concentration of protons on one side of the membrane compared to the other. The coupling of electron transport and proton pumping serves as a driving factor for ATP synthesis by providing the necessary electrochemical gradient.


3. Chemiosmosis: The proton gradient generated by the ETC drives the process of chemiosmosis. Protons are facilitated to flow back across the membrane via ATP synthase, an enzyme complex. This flow of protons, known as proton motive force, combines the chemical potential (concentration gradient of protons) and the electrical potential (difference in charge across the membrane) to drive the formation of ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate (Pi).


4. Oxygen as the Final Electron Acceptor: The availability of oxygen is critical for driving the ETC. Molecular oxygen serves as the final electron acceptor, receiving electrons at the end of the chain. Without the presence of oxygen, the ETC cannot remove electrons from its carriers, leading to a buildup of intermediates and the halting of the process.


5. NADH and FADH2 Levels: The levels of NADH and FADH2, which act as electron donors, influence the rate of electron transport. The availability of NADH and FADH2 depends on the metabolic state of the cell and the substrates available for oxidative metabolism. Higher levels of NADH and FADH2 increase the electron flow in the ETC, driving ATP synthesis.
