MOV Metal Oxide Varistor is a nonlinear resistance element with zinc oxide (ZnO) as the main component. Its resistance is sensitive to changes in applied voltage. Specifically, below the threshold voltage, the resistance is very high and the current flowing through is extremely small, which is equivalent to a closed valve; when the voltage exceeds the threshold, the resistance drops sharply and the current flowing through surges, which is equivalent to an open valve. Using this characteristic, MOV can suppress abnormal overvoltages that often occur in circuits and protect circuits from damage caused by overvoltages.
