Nickel sulfate (NiSO4) is a midstream product of the nickel industry chain. It is a nickel salt obtained by smelting and processing nickel sulfide ore or laterite nickel ore. Nickel sulfate is usually divided into electroplating grade nickel sulfate and battery grade nickel sulfate according to different application scenarios. Electroplating grade nickel sulfate is the main nickel salt of electroplating nickel and chemical nickel, and is also the source of metal nickel ions. It can dissociate nickel ions and sulfate ions during the electroplating process. Battery grade nickel sulfate is mainly used in the battery field to manufacture precursor materials for ternary batteries and spherical nickel hydroxide for nickel-hydrogen batteries. Nickel sulfate is one of the key raw materials for the preparation of lithium battery positive electrode materials. Especially in the manufacturing process of ternary lithium batteries, nickel sulfate, together with raw materials such as cobalt salts and manganese salts, generates precursors of positive electrode materials through a series of chemical reactions. Battery grade nickel sulfate has a specific chemical composition and physical form, usually in the form of crystalline powder (some companies also provide cobalt sulfate solution).


According to USGS data, global nickel resources are mainly distributed in Indonesia, Australia, Brazil, Russia, the Philippines, China, Canada, the United States and other countries. Among them, Indonesia, Australia and Brazil account for 60% of nickel resource reserves. However, in recent years, Indonesia has gradually tightened its export restrictions on raw ore, which has had a certain impact on the supply of raw materials for nickel sulfate. On the one hand, the transportation cost of the solution is very high, and the selling price + transportation cost is much higher than that of electroplating-grade nickel sulfate; on the other hand, the solution is a dangerous product, and long-term storage has a certain impact on the content of the product itself. At the same time, the crystal powder is easy to store and can be resold on the market.
