Spread spectrum is a technique in which the clock frequency is slightly adjusted to reduce the peak energy generated by the clock. The Spread Spectrum Clock Generator (SSCG) products support two different types of spreading: Down Spread and Center Spread. The type of spread spectrum used depends on the specification of the clocking target. Some target chipsets, CPUs, etc. have a maximum clock frequency specification that cannot be violated. In these cases, down-spread should be used.
